This Margaret Jane Knowles portrait was taken at Summerhayes & Walford in Montreal. The Summerhayes &Walford partnership began about 1881 until around 1891. In this portrait, Margaret has on a pleated dress with white collar, dark stockings and sturdy shoes. The background is a studio screen and the swing is a photo studio prop.

The back of the photo is labeled:

  1. Margaret Jane Knowles, 1886, 11 yrs
  2. Mother of Charles Jordan
  3. Grandma Graham

The writing on the back of the photo appears to be written by different people at different times.

On many records throughout her adult life, Margaret Knowles regularly indicated her birthdate as March 19, 1878. However, her Christening record indicated she was born on April 19, 1878 in Montreal. It is not known which is in error.

By her 11th birthday in 1889, the family was living in Chicago and not in Montreal. Thus the written 11 yrs on the back of the photo cannot be correct and was probably a guess. To me, she appears a few years younger than 11 years, perhaps around 8 or 9. Given reference to the year 1886 in script on the back of the photo, I decided to approximately date this photo as her 8th Birthday, March or April 19, 1886. The Knowles Address in 1886 was 365 Wellington, Montreal.

Margaret Jame Knowles is the daughter of William and Isabella Knowles. She married James Oscar Jordan on December 30, 1896 and they were divorced June 19, 1919. She then married Robert Aaron Graham on June 20, 1920. Beverly Lynch and daughter of Charles J. Jordan might have written the text in dark black ink and and perhaps the penciled reference to Grandma Graham, her grandmother.

Beverly Lynch inherited this photograph from her father Charles J. Jordan, the 3rd son of James Oscar Jordan. Beverly gave this portrait to Dave Jordan in the late 1980s.
